  3. Up  to  now, distribution  of  software  has  relied  either  on
  4. restricting  access (and charging for the cost of doing so),  or
  5. anonymously  casting programs into the public domain.  The  user-
  6. supported  concept  might  -- just  might  -- be a way  for  the
  7. computing  community to  support and  encourage  creative  work
  8. outside the traditional marketplace.
  9. This is an experiment in  economics  more  than  altruism.  Free
  10. distribution  of software and voluntary payment for its use would
  11. eliminate the  need  for  money  to  be  spent  on   marketing,
  12. advertising, and copy protection  schemes.  Users  could  obtain
  13. quality software at reduced cost, while still supporting program
  14. authors. And the most useful programs would survive, based purely
  15. on their usefulness.
